Vaginal Rejuventation Q & A
What is vaginal laxity?
When you deliver babies vaginally, tissues stretch and the vagina can become permanently loose, or lax. Vaginal laxity can also be caused by aging muscles that lose tone, medical conditions that affect collagen metabolism, and menopause. Some women find that their sexual satisfaction diminishes due to vaginal laxity.
What is vaginal atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy develops when estrogen levels drop during menopause. Atrophy broadly refers to deterioration of the tissues. Without sufficient estrogen, the vaginal tissues produce less collagen, which contributes to poor tone, laxity, and loss of elasticity. The vaginal wall gets thinner and drier and becomes inflamed when you lack estrogen.
Vaginal atrophy has a significant impact on women, causing symptoms such as:
- Vaginal dryness
- Vaginal burning and itching
- Vaginal laxity
- Painful intercourse
- Bleeding after intercourse
- Less lubrication during intercourse
- Painful or frequent urination
- Urinary incontinence
What is vaginal rejuvenation?
Vaginal rejuvenation refers procedures that restore vaginal tissues back to their healthy state. One type of rejuvenation, vaginoplasty, is a surgical procedure that tightens the walls inside the vagina. However, you don’t need to have surgery, because you can get nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation at Skin MD with the MonaLisa Touch advanced laser treatment.
How does the MonaLisa Touch treat vaginal tissues?
The MonaLisa Touch is a gentle laser specially designed to treat vaginal tissues. It uses a fractional CO2 laser that’s delivered in pinpoint-like spots inside the vagina. Heat from the laser triggers collagen production. This boost in collagen strengthens tissues, improving tone and texture. The treatment also boosts levels of hyaluronic acid, which hydrates tissues and increases the blood supply.
After treatment with the MonaLisa Touch, the vaginal wall returns to the healthy state it had before menopause. The regenerated tissues are thicker, tighter, and better toned, which means laxity is diminished and atrophy is reversed. Symptoms such as vaginal dryness and pain go away, and your sexual experience is enhanced.
What can you expect during and after treatment with the MonaLisa Touch?
The treatment is gentle and painless, so you won’t need an anesthetic. The MonaLisa Touch is designed to be inserted into your vagina, then it emits the laser to consistently reach all of the vaginal tissues.
The entire treatment only takes about five minutes, although three treatments over about 18 weeks are recommended for optimal and long-lasting results. When the treatment is finished, you can get back to your daily activities right away.
