Skin Tightening Q & A

by Elizabeth Piantanida, MD

Why should I consider skin tightening?

As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and may sag in places it was once smooth and taut. We can also experience shifts in our body mass so our skin doesn’t fit us quite as snugly as it once did. Dr. Piantanida recommends non-invasive, non-surgical skin tightening procedures to address these issues, as well as improving overall skin health.

What happens during a skin tightening treatment?

Dr. Piantanida conducts a full evaluation of your physical health and medical history before recommending any course of treatment. She then advises on the options that best meet both your health needs and your aesthetic goals.

Radiofrequency treatments are a popular choice for skin tightening. These procedures heat the deep layer of your skin, stimulating new cell production and increasing collagen production in your upper layer. After a single treatment session, your body begins repairing and reconstructing new layers of skin by itself. You may notice an immediate improvement, but your body keeps working and the most significant results may be visible two to six months after the initial treatment.

Dr. Piantanida performs two different radiofrequency skin tightening treatments: Pellevé® and Thermage®.

What is Pellevé?

Pellevé uses a GlideSafe® device to heat the dermal (lower) layer of your skin with radio frequency energy. This triggers your natural response to heal the treated cells and grow new collagen. It’s particularly effective on skin that has become thinner with age and is safe and gentle enough to be used on the delicate skin around your eyes to smooth crow’s feet and eyelid wrinkles.

If Dr. Piantanida is treating your whole face, then a typical Pellevé session lasts from 45-60 minutes. It may take a few sessions, spaced a month apart, to get the results you want. Pellevé is a safe and comfortable treatment that doesn’t require any downtime.

What is Thermage?

Thermage procedures also work on the lower layer of your skin, leaving the upper layer intact. Dr. Piantanida uses a device that alternates heat from radiofrequency energy with the gentle vibrations and cooling effects of Comfort Pulse Technology™. Thermage smooths and tightens skin on all areas of the body, and is suitable for all skin types. You only need one treatment to see rapid results although, as with any collagen boosting therapy, your skin keeps improving for several months.
